Why Feed Costs So Much
One of the most common questions we get is why feed costs are so high for a rescue. The simple answer: many of the horses that come to Broken to Brave arrive underweight, neglected, or unable to eat normally — and helping them recover takes far more than basic hay.
Right now, we are spending close to $3,000 per month on hay and grain alone.
Several of our rescues require specialized feeding programs. Senior horses like Walker and Poppy need twice-daily mash feedings because dental disease prevents them from chewing hay properly. Underweight rescues need extra calories from grain, alfalfa pellets, beet pulp, oats, and supplements to safely regain weight. Young horses who are still growing also require consistent nutrition to stay healthy.
Rescue feeding isn’t just about keeping horses alive — it’s about rebuilding bodies that have been neglected for too long.
Weight gain takes time, consistency, and quality nutrition every single day. Missing even a few days of proper feeding can set recovery back significantly.
When you donate to Broken to Brave, you’re not just buying feed — you’re helping a rescue horse regain strength, comfort, and the ability to thrive again.
Every bale, every scoop, and every meal matters.
