The Full Story

Why sponsorship and donations matter

Not everyone can adopt — but everyone can help change a life.

Many of the horses and donkeys at Broken to Brave arrive from kill pens, auctions, neglect situations, or owner surrenders. Some are young and learning to trust. Others require lifelong care. Every one of them deserves safety, nutrition, medical care, and patience.

Sponsoring a rescue helps provide hay, feed, farrier care, veterinary care, training, and rehabilitation while these animals heal and prepare for their futures.

When you sponsor a rescue horse, you become part of their story.

Horses in Rehabilitation & Training

Summer

A sensitive young mare rescued from a kill pen who is learning to trust people again through patient gentling and halter-breaking. She loves cookies, quiet pets, and reassurance.

Noodle

A fluffy baby rescued from a kill pen at just 3 months old after being separated from his mama. Now about 6 months old, he’s growing fast, loves attention, and is expected to be very tall.

Eugene

A handsome young horse saved from a kill pen with minutes to spare. Currently in training and scheduled to be gelded soon before finding his forever home.

Geraldine

Around 1 year old and rescued from a kill pen, Geraldine is quickly coming around — especially when cookies are involved. She needs farrier care, routine vet care, worming, and training to prepare for adoption.

Clover

A stunning young red mare, likely about 1 year old, rescued from a kill pen. She’s spicy and full of personality and needs farrier care, vet care, worming, and training to help her grow into her potential.

Jefferson

Saved from a kill pen by an amazing sponsor who believed in him, Jefferson is about a year old, shy but incredibly sweet, and ready to grow with training, vet care, farrier care, and lots of treats.

Medical/Special Care Horses

Lucky

Around 1 year old, Lucky arrived terrified but has blossomed into a Cookie Monster who loves attention. He will soon need vet care, farrier care, and continued training.

Chloe

Under 2 years old and needing significant care on arrival, Chloe is either very young and pregnant or recovering from a heavy parasite load. She required abscess treatment and is working on gaining weight and strength. She will need follow-up worming and a vet appointment soon.

Spirit

Rescued from an auction in extremely poor condition with only a 20% chance of survival, Spirit fought back and is now about a year old and thriving. He remains in our care due to complications with gelding while preparing for his future.

Senior and Sanctuary Horses

Walker

An older rescue who arrived emaciated and suffering from severe dental disease, Walker has only two front teeth and requires twice-daily mash feedings and specialized care. He will likely live out his life at Broken to Brave.

Poppy

A senior mare close to 30 years old, once used as a children’s lesson horse before being discarded into a kill pen. She arrived severely emaciated and now requires twice-daily mash feedings and ongoing senior care while she regains strength.

Scooter

A mare in her late teens who came to us after her beloved owner passed away. She requires routine and complex farrier care due to a leg length difference and serves as the mama of the herd, caring for younger rescues.

Tigger and Eeyore
